Babskii, Evgenii Borisovich
Born Jan. 28, 1902, in Goris, Armenia. Soviet physiologist; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1948). Member of the CPSU since 1932.
Babskii graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1924. From 1932 to 1949 he was a professor at the Lenin Pedagogical Institute in Moscow; he later worked at the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and, since 1952, in institutions of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. His principal works have been devoted to the study of the formation and functional significance of chemical agents in the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, and muscles. Babskii discovered certain enzyme-chemical changes during nerve electrotonus and developed a theory of the chemical mechanism of tetanic contractions of the skeletal muscle. He developed and perfected a number of methods for investigating cardiac activity and the gastrointestinal tract, and he has worked in the field of experimental cardiology.
