Vreden, Edmund Romanovich
Born 1835; died July 21, 1891. Russian economist.
Vreden taught political economy, statistics, and the theory of state credit at the University of St. Petersburg and in other institutions of higher education. He participated in the work of the Russian Geographical Society and the Free Economic Society. An adherent of the views of popular political economy, Vreden regarded value and services as part of capital because they supposedly help to create new income from production. He spoke out against the pomeshchik (fief holding) serf owners and defended bourgeois development of the rural economy. Vreden was influenced by the views of liberal Narodniks (Populists).
