Rovigo

(rōvē`gō), city (1991 pop. 52,472), capital of Rovigo prov., Venetia, N Italy, between the Adige and the Po rivers. It is an agricultural market and an industrial center. Manufactures include furniture, ceramics, dyes, beer, and leather goods. First mentioned in the 9th cent., Rovigo belonged to the Este family from 1194 to 1482, when it passed to Venice. Of note in the city are the octagonal Church of the Madonna del Soccorso (late 16th cent.) and an excellent art gallery.

Rovigo is a transportation junction in the interfluve of the Po and Adige rivers near their influx into the Adriatic Sea. It has food, garment, and furniture industries; there is also production of chemical fertilizers, construction materials, leather, and rope.
