Rowan, Andrew Summers
(rou`ən), 1857–1943, American army officer, b. Monroe co., Va. (now W.Va.). At the outbreak (1898) of the Spanish-American War he was sent to communicate with the Cuban revolutionary leader General García y IñiguesGarcía y Iñigues, Calixto, 1839–98, Cuban revolutionist, a leader in the Ten Years War (1868–78). Captured and imprisoned until 1878, he entered upon revolutionary activities immediately after his release and was again arrested.

1856–1915, American author and publisher, b. Bloomington, Ill. He founded (1895) an artist colony in East Aurora, N.Y., and established there the Roycroft Press, emulating William Morris's idealistic experiment in fine books and hand craftsmanship.
