Smela
a city under oblast jurisdiction in Smela Raion, Cherkassy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Situated on the Tiasmin River, a tributary of the Dnieper, 30 km southwest of Cherkassy. Railroad station on the Cherkassy-imeni Taras Shevchenko line. Population, 59,000 (1975). The city has a machine-building plant, a plant for the repair of electromechanical equipment, a sugar refinery, a brewery, a milk-canning combine, a garment factory, and a furniture factory. There are also railroad maintenance enterprises. Smela has a food-processing technicum and a museum of local lore.
