Born Jan. 1, 1892, in Capiz, now Roxas; died Apr. 15, 1948, in Manila. Philippine political figure.

In 1919, Roxas became the leader of the right wing of the Nationalist Party, and from 1935 to 1941 he served in the government. During the Japanese occupation (December 1941 to 1945), he was an active collaborationist, but in 1945 he was rehabilitated by the American high command. In 1946, Roxas created and headed the Liberal Party, which reflected the interests of the most reactionary strata of landowners and bureaucrats. In April 1946 he was elected president of the Philippine Republic. He signed a series of inequitable economic and military agreements with the USA; in his domestic policy he opposed the enactment of social changes.
