Utuy Tatang Sontani

Born May 13, 1920, in Tjiandjur. Indonesian writer.

A Sundanese by nationality, Utuy Tatang Sontani published his first works in 1937 in Sundanese, including short stories, verses, and the novel Because of Father. After the proclamation of Indonesian independence, he wrote in Indonesian. His works include The Losers (1951), which is a short-story collection of sharp social insight, and Tambera (1949; Russian translation, 1964), a novel about the beginnings of Dutch expansion in Indonesia. He wrote several plays, for example, Flower of the Café (1948; Russian translation, 1957), Awal and Mira (1951), and Why Are There Others (1954). An existentialist world view pervades the dramas In the Sky There Are Stars (1955) and The Decisive Moment (1957). The influence of Freudianism is evident in the drama Sangkuriang (1955).

In the late 1950’s, Utuy Tatang Sontani joined the Society of People’s Culture (Lekra), a progressive cultural organization. He intensified the satirical element in his work, for example, in the drama Kabayan (1959; Russian translation, 1960), and deepened the social content of such works as the play Kampung (1964) and the tale Si Sapar (1964). He emigrated after the events of 1965.
