Smirnov, Anatolii Filippovich

 

Born Nov. 8 (21), 1909, in the stanitsa (large cossack village) of Racheika, Syzran’ Raion, in what is now Kuibyshev Oblast. Soviet scientist specializing in structural mechanics and building design. Doctor of technical sciences (1949). Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1951.

In 1935, Smirnov graduated from the Moscow Institute of Railroad Transportation Engineering, where he taught structural mechanics beginning in 1936 and became a professor in 1947. In 1969 he became director of the V. A. Kucherenko Central Scientific Research Institute of Building Structures and editor in chief of the journal Stroitel’naia mekhanika i raschet sooruzhenii (Structural Mechanics and Design).

Smirnov’s principal works deal with research on the static and dynamic stability and vibrations of structures. Smirnov has proposed a matrix form of solution of various problems in structural mechanics. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
