Smirnov, Ivan Timofeevich

Born 1852, in the village of Viaznitsy, Tver’ Province; died 1896, in Kansk. One of the first Russian worker revolutionaries.

The son of a peasant, Smirnov worked in factories in St. Petersburg, where he became closely acquainted with Narodniki (Populists). From 1873 to 1875 he helped organize workers’ circles and conducted propaganda in factories in St. Petersburg and Moscow. In 1876 he was banished to Olonets Province, from which he escaped in 1877. He continued his revolutionary activities in Kostroma and later in Moscow. In November 1878, Smirnov was again arrested, and in 1880 he was banished to Enisei Province. [23–1822–]
