Pavel Apollonovich Tutkovskii

Born Feb. 17 (Mar. 1), 1858, in Lipovets, in what is now Vinnitsa Oblast; died June 3,1930, in Kiev. Soviet geologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1919) and the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1928).

After graduating from the University of Kiev in 1882, Tut-kovskii worked as curator of the university’s geological and min-eralogical collections from 1884 to 1895. Between 1904 and 1913 he first taught at public schools in Volyn’, then became inspector of public schools, and finally director of public schools. In 1914 he became a professor at the University of Kiev. In 1924, Tut-kovskii organized a scientific research department of geology at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which was reorganized in 1926 into the Institute of Geological Sciences.

Tutkovskii’s principal works were on the mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, hydrogeology, and paleography of the Quaternary period. He developed the concept of Anthropogenic continental glaciation and the link between glacial stages and the ages of formation of southern Russian loess, proving its eolian origin; he also wrote a classic work on dunes. His hydrogeological research led to the discovery of an artesian basin, which ensured a supply of water to Kiev. Tutkovskii was one of the founders of the micropaleontological method of studying sedimentary rocks.
