Roy, Jamini

Born in 1887 in Beliator, Bengal. Indian painter and graphic artist.

Roy attended the State College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. Using a tempera technique and the traditions of Bengali folk art, which he first studied in 1921, Roy has produced portraits and compositions marked by decorative stylization (for example, Toilette and Three Women). His best works are distinguished by expressive compositional simplicity, boldly energetic draftsmanship, and the harmonious arrangement of areas of local colors.
