Roza Umbetovna Dzhamanova

Born Apr. 16, 1928, in Aktiubinsk. Soviet Kazakh soprano, People’s Artist of the USSR (1959). Member of the CPSU from 1963.

Dzhamanova graduated from the voice class of A. M. Kurganov at the Institute of Art in Alma-Ata in 1954. In 1953 she became a soloist at the Kazakh Theater of Opera and Ballet, where she has portrayed several musical stage characters including Sara (Tulebaev’s Birzhan and Sara), Azhar (Zhubanov’s and Khamidi’s Abai), Nazugum (Kuzham’-iarov’s Nazugum), Kamar (Rakhmadiev’s Kamar sulu), Tat’iana (Tchaikovsky’s Eugene One gin), and Marguerita (Gounod’s Faust). Dzhamanova is also a concert singer and has toured abroad (Poland in 1959, India in 1963, Canada in 1967, and Italy in 1968). She was a deputy to the eighth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and the seventh convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.
