Pavel Evgenevich Lukomskii

Born July 11 (23), 1899, in the small town of Suvorovskii Shtab, in present-day Grodno Oblast. Soviet internist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1963), Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1967), Hero of Socialist Labor (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1957.

Lukomskii graduated from the medical department of Moscow State University in 1923. He was a professor at the First Moscow and Cheliabinsk medical institutes from 1941 to 1949 and head of the subdepartment of medical lecture-demonstration of the Second Moscow Medical Institute from 1949 to 1953. He has been head of the subdepartment of hospital therapy of the Second Moscow Medical Institute since 1953.

Lukomskii’s main works deal with various aspects of cardiology—the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and cardiogenic shock and the use of modern instruments to examine the cardiovascular system. In 1938 he published the first study in the USSR on the use of chest leads for an electrocardiogram in myocardial infarction.

Lukomskii has been chairman of the All-Union Cardiological Society since 1963 and editor in chief of the journal Kardiologiia since 1966. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1969. He is a corresponding member of the French Society of Cardiologists (1964) and an honorary member of the cardiological societies of the German Democratic Republic (1968), Poland (1968), and the USA (1971). Lukomskii has been awarded two orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
