anorectal manometry

A procedure that measures the tension in the external and internal anal sphincters, as part of a work-up for constipation or faecal incontinence.
 
Procedure
After evacuation of the bowel with enemas, a metal tube is inserted ± 15 cm through which a second, thinner tube is inserted, which has an inflatable balloon at its end; the pressure response of the rectal wall to the expanding balloon is measured.
