Smithfield


Smithfield,

district of the City of London, England. Beginning in the 12th cent., it was used for fairs, markets, jousts, and executions. During the reign of Queen Mary I (1553–58), Protestants were executed there. London's central meat market is in Smithfield.

Smithfield,

town (1990 pop. 19,163), Providence co., N R.I.; set off from Providence and inc. 1731. Long a textile town, it now has diversified industries. It was settled early in the 18th cent., mainly by Quakers. Bryant Univ. is there.
