Smith, Oliver (Lemuel)

(1918–94) set designer; born in Waupun, Wis. Winner of many awards including seven Tonys and the Sam S. Shubert Award for Achievement in the Theatre, his designs span all aspects of performance—drama, opera, ballet and film. He began his Broadway career in 1942 with Rosalinda. Thereafter he designed for Brigadoon (1947), My Fair Lady (1956), West Side Story (1957), and The Odd Couple (1965).
