Texas State Railroad State Park
Location:In Anderson and Cherokee counties between the cities of Rusk and Palestine, adjacent to US 84.
Facilities:This park connects the two units of Rusk/Palestine State Park (see separate entry).
Activities:Visitors can enjoy a 26-mile train ride between Rusk and Palestine depots. Special train runs are provided during the operating season in addition to the normal schedule. Film presentations on the railroad's history are presented at a small theater at the Rusk station.
Special Features:Construction of the Texas State Railroad was begun in 1893 by the state prison system as a plant facility of the penitentiary, to serve an iron furnace and other industries. Most of the railroad line was given to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1971 for creation of a state historical park dedicated to the preservation of steam locomotives and railroading's golden age.
