preppy

A certain style of dress, such as madras shorts and loafers, and behavior. The term, which alludes to a typical traditional preparatory school associated with such styles, dates from the 1970s and became widespread through a book, The Official Preppy Handbook (1980). It stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a year. It was followed by a sequel, True Prep (2010), supposedly addressed to the core readership. The term continues to be used, both as a noun and an adjective (as in “preppy manners”) despite social changes that occurred over three decades. See also yuppie.
