UranoscopidaeUranoscopidaea family offish of the order Perciformes. The fish have a large, almost vertical, surface-feeding mouth, fimbriated lips, and eyes placed on top of the head. The body measures up to 30 cm long. The fish are found primarily in the warm and temperate zones of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans, particularly near the coasts of Japan and eastern India. Uranoscopidae are predators; they burrow into the sand and lie in wait for prey. The common star-gazer (Uranoscopus scaber), which lures its victim with a wormlike growth on its lower jaw, is found in the USSR in the Black Sea. Some species of the genus Astroscopus have electric organs on their heads. Uranoscopidae have no commercial significance. Uranoscopidae
