view and grant system

view and grant system

The approach in Scotland for deciding whether
(1) there should be a post-mortem examination;
(2) the nature and extent of that examination; and
(3) the person to conduct it.
In sudden unexpected deaths, the Procurator Fiscal reviews the medical records of the decedent and circumstances in detail, examines the body with a forensic pathologist, then decides whether a PM exam is warranted. In the view and grant system, the cause of death is an educated guess, resulting in an overestimation of the common causes of death (e.g., coronary heart disease).
