Sugar-Bearing Plant

Sugar-Bearing Plant

a plant that accumulates substantial amounts of sugar, mainly sucrose, in its tissues. Sugar beets and sugarcane yield the greatest amounts of sugar. Other important sugar bearers are sorghum, varieties of table corn, Jerusalem artichoke, gomuti palm, and wine palm (Mauritiella vinifera). The sap of the sugar maple, which is obtained by tapping the trunk, yields maple sugar. The watermelon yields a concentrated syrup. The camel thorn secretes a sweet gluey fluid that hardens in granule form (manna), and the flesh of the carob contains as much as 50 percent sugar. Other sugar-bearing plants are muskmelon and chicory.
