ancient western Caucasian tribes who inhabited the southeastern coast of the Black Sea.

According to Greek and Roman historians from the sixth to the first century B.C., the Tibareni formed a large tribal confederation. Their economy was based on cattle raising and fishing. The Greek city of Cotyora was located in their territory. In the fifth century B.C., the region inhabited by the Tibareni was made part of the 19th satrapy of Darius I and was later subjugated by the rulers of Armenia Minor. Still later, the Tibareni were subdued by Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus, and fought in his wars against the Romans.
