Uusimaa

 

(Swedish, Nyland) a lääni (province) in southern Finland, on the Gulf of Finland. Area, 10,400 sq km. Population, more than 1 million (1973), 82 percent of which is urban. The capital of the lääni is Helsinki.

Uusimaa yields 23 percent of the gross national industrial product. As of 1973, industry and construction employed 35 percent of the economically active population, agriculture and forestry employed 5 percent, and services employed 59 percent. Industry includes machine building, shipbuilding, electrical engineering, oil refining, food processing, printing, and the production of textiles. Agriculture is carried on near the cities.
