Venev

 

a city, administrative center of Venev Raion, Tula Oblast, RSFSR, on the Venevka River (a tributary of the Osetr). Its railroad station is on the Moscow-Uzlovaia line. Population, 6,500 (1969). The mining of hard coal and the quarrying of stone are carried on in the surrounding area. Venev was first mentioned in historical documents in 1400 and became a city in 1777.
