staff status

staff status

the status held by those individuals (usually ‘white-collar'WORKERS) whose conditions of employment, including hours of work, holiday and pension entitlements are generally more favourable than those possessed by manual workers in an organization. It is also common for those enjoying staff status to have separate canteen arrangements. Many believe that these differences foster a ‘them and us’ attitude at work, and some organizations have attempted to overcome this by a process of harmonization – bringing the conditions of employment of all or most employees into line (usually towards the more favourable ones of those with staff status).
