Varnedoe, (John) Kirk (Train)

(1946– ) museum curator, teacher; born in Savannah, Ga. He studied at Williams College (B.A.) and Stanford (M.A., Ph.D.). He taught at Stanford (1973–77), Columbia University (1974–80), and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (1980–88). He headed the department of painting and sculpture of the Museum of Modern Art, and in addition to his numerous articles and lectures on art topics, he has become known for his imaginative exhibits.
