Abrahams, Peter Henry

Born Mar. 19, 1919, in Vredefort. A writer of the Republic of South Africa. The novel Mine Boy (1945) is built around the idea of the union of workers of all races. The novel The Path of Thunder (1948; Russian translation 1955) tells about the tragic love of a colored teacher and a white girl. The theme of the historical novel Conquest (1950) is the subjugation of the Zulus by the Boers. The novel A Wreath for Udomo (1956; Russian translation 1965) reflects the struggle for independence in the African countries. The novel In the Power of the Night (1965; Russian translation 1968) tells how different racial groups and underground fighters against the racist authorities of the Republic of South Africa overcome mutual prejudices. The novel This Island, Now, published in 1966, deals with the struggle of a Caribbean island for political independence.
