Volgodonsk

a city in Rostov Oblast, RSFSR. A port on the west bank of the Tsimliansk Reservoir. Has a railroad station (Volgodonsk) on the Morozovsk-Kuberle line. Population, 28,000 (1970).

Volgodonsk has a chemical complex based on petroleum products that are supplied from plants in the Caucasus, the Volga Region, and the Western Ukraine, an experimental plant for road machinery, and a timber-shipping combine. Volgodonsk was founded in connection with the construction of the Lenin Volga-Don Ship Canal and the Tsimliansk Hydroelectric Power Plant; it has had city status since 1956.
