Suleiman Franjieh

Franjieh, Suleiman

 

Born June 14, 1910, in Zgharta, northern Lebanon. Lebanese statesman.

The son of a landowner, Franjieh is a Maronite Christian. In 1931 he graduated from a college in Aynturah, near Beirut. In 1960, for the first of several times, he was elected a deputy to the parliament, and he later became a cabinet member. Franjieh was president of the Lebanese Republic from 1970 to 1976. During the political crisis of 1975–76, the right-wing Christian forces of Lebanon grouped around him.
