Suleiman Mirza Eskanderi, Mohsen
Born 1873; died December 1943. Leading figure of the democratic movement in Iran.
Suleiman fought in the Iranian Revolution of 1905–11 and helped organize the anjomans (bourgeois revolutionary organizations). He was several times elected a deputy of the Majlis (National Assembly). In 1922 and 1923 he headed the left wing of the National Bloc, which comprised several political groupings that represented the national bourgeoisie, progressive-minded landowners, and the intelligentsia. In 1923 and 1924 he was minister of education. Suleiman helped found the Tudeh Party in 1941 and later was the party’s chairman.
