Sergei Aleksandrovich Zhebelev

Born Sept. 10 (22), 1867, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 28, 1941, in Leningrad. Soviet historian, specialist in ancient history, epigraphy, archaeology, and classical philology. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR; 1927).

Zhebelev graduated from the history and philology department of St. Petersburg University in 1890. From 1904 to 1927 he was a professor at St. Petersburg, and later Lenin-grad, University. From 1927 he directed the study of antiquities of the Northern Black Sea coast at the State Academy of the History of Material Culture (since 1937, the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the AN SSSR).

Zhebelev is the author of numerous works on the history of Greece of the Hellenistic and Roman period (From the History of Athens, 1898;Ac/ia/cfl, 1903), the ancient history of the Northern Black Sea coast (collected in The Northern Black Sea Coast, 1953), archaeology (An Introduction to Archaeology, parts 1–2, 1923), and of translations of ancient writers (Aristotle, Plato, Appian). He trained a large number of scholars and teachers. In 1941, during the seige of Lenin-grad, Zhebelev chose to stay and directed until the day of his death those institutions of the AN SSSR that had remained in the city.
