Ternovskii, Sergei Dmitrievich

 

Born Sept. 8 (20), 1896, in the village of Ziuzdino, in what is now Kirov Oblast; died Nov. 19, 1960, in Moscow. Soviet surgeon; founder of pediatric surgery in the USSR. Corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1957).

In 1919, Ternovskii graduated from the department of medicine at Moscow University. In 1942 he became a professor in the subdepartment of pediatric surgery and orthopedics at the Second Moscow Medical Institute; in 1943 he became the head of the subdepartment. Ternovskii’s chief works dealt with orthopedics and traumatology; pediatric urology; thoracic, abdominal, and plastic pediatric surgery; and surgery on the newborn. He devised original surgical methods for correcting hernia cerebri, harelip, and cleft palate in children. Ternovskii established a school of pediatric surgery. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
