Grigor’ev, Sergei Grigor’evich

Born Oct. 12 (24), 1874, in Moscow; died there Aug. 29, 1931. Soviet geographer.

Grigor’ev graduated from Moscow University in 1897 and taught geography there beginning in 1909, becoming a professor in 1918. He traveled through Middle Asia, the Altai, the Southern Urals, the Caucasus, the Crimea, the central regions of the European part, the Ukraine, Kanin, and the Kola Peninsula, as well as through many countries of Western Europe and the Near East. His chief concern was regional geography. Together with A. A. Kruber, A. S. Barkov, and S. V. Chefranov, Grigor’ev wrote textbooks and teaching aids dealing with all the continents as well as with Russian geography. These works played an important role in improving the teaching of geography.
