Pleshcheev, Sergei Ivanovich

 

Born 1752 in Moscow; died Jan. 23 (Feb. 4), 1802, in Montpellier, France. Russian vice admiral (1797).

Pleshcheev made a survey of the Dardanelles in 1775 and of the Black Sea coast near Sinop and Trabzon in 1776. He was the author of one of the first geographic descriptions of Russia, Survery of the Russian Empire in Its Present Newly Restructured State (1787). The work describes the country by individual regions.
