Sergei Lvov
L’vov, Sergei Dmitrievich
Born Sept. 20 (Oct. 2), 1879, in Kazan; died Jan. 6, 1959, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Member of the CPSU from 1946.
L’vov graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1911, where he was a student of V. I. Palladin. He worked at the Institute of Forestry (1911-15) and from 1915 at Petrograd University (from 1924, Leningrad State University); between 1931 and 1959 he was chairman of the subdepartment of plant physiology. His main work dealt with plant metabolism (the role of enzymes in respiration and fermentation, the biochemical basis of drought resistance).
