Ruben, Walter

 

Born Dec. 26, 1899, in Hamburg. German indologist (German Democratic Republic).

Ruben was a professor in Ankara from 1935 to 1948 and in Santiago, Chile, from 1948 to 1949. He has taught in Berlin since 1950. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in 1955. His main works are on the social history of ancient India and on the history of Indian philosophy and literature. He was awarded the National Prize of the GDR in 1959.
