Pribina ruled the principality of Nitra (now in Slovakia), from which he was expelled by Prince Moimir I around 833. He received the principality of Blaten as a fief in 842 from King Louis the German. Pribina acquired full sovereignty over the principality in 848. He founded Blaten, or Blatengrad, the capital of the principality, and promoted the Christianization of the local Slavic population.
