Sergei Vasilevich Barkhudarian

Barkhudarian, Sergei Vasil’evich

 

(also Sarkis V. Barkhudarian). Born Aug. 26 (Sept. 7), 1887, in Tbilisi. Soviet composer and teacher. People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR (1960).

In 1915, Barkhudarian graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He wrote piano pieces which played a significant role in the development of national instrumental chamber music. He also composed the ballet Narine (1938), symphonic works, romances, and music for the theater and motion pictures; he has made arrangements of folk songs. Barkhudarian taught at the Tbilisi Conservatory from 1923 to 1954 and at the Yerevan Conservatory from 1934 to 1937 (in 1941 he attained the rank of professor). He has been awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal.
