batch size

batch size

the number of items which constitute a ‘batch’ in BATCH PRODUCTION. The use of very large batch sizes, whilst having the advantage of minimizing the total costs associated with setting up the production facilities, has the disadvantage of incurring high stock-holding costs. On the other hand, the manufacture of many small batches of items, whilst keeping average stock levels down and thus reducing stock-holding costs, increases total SET-UP COSTS since more set ups are required for the production of a given total quantity of items in a given time. Some compromise must therefore be reached which has the effect of minimizing total stock-holding and setting-up costs.

The economic batch quantity which minimizes total costs can be calculated in similar fashion to the economic order quantity in the STOCKHOLDING MODEL. See LEAN MANUFACTURING.
