Várpalota


Várpalota

 

a city in Hungary, in the megye (district) of Veszprém, near the northern spurs of the Bakony Mountains. It was formed in 1952 as a result of the amalgamation of Várpalota with the neighboring settlements of Pét and Inota. Population, 27,000 (1967). Over two-thirds of the economically active population is employed in coal mining (there are deposits of lignite in the area) and industry (the aluminum combine in Inota, the oil refinery and nitrogen fertilizer plant in Pét). There are steam power plants in Inota, Pét, and Várpalota.
