Urbany, Dominique

Born Mar. 29, 1903, in Rumelange. Figure in the Luxembourgian and international workers’ movement.

The son of a worker, Urbany was a teacher by profession. In January 1921 he took part in the work of the Founding Congress of the Communist Party of Luxembourg (CPL). In 1929 he became a member of the Central Committee of the CPL, in 1930 a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee, and later a member of the Executive Committee of the Central Committee. Urbany served as general secretary of the CPL from 1933 to 1965 and became the party’s chairman in April 1965. He was a delegate to the Seventh Congress of the Comintern in 1935. In 1945 he became a deputy to Parliament and during 1946 and 1947 served as the minister of public health, social security, and sports. Urbany was awarded the Order of the October Revolution in 1973.
