Peale, Rembrandt

(1778–1860) painter; born in Bucks County, Pa. (son of Charles Willson Peale). Based in Philadelphia, he traveled widely in Europe and was a founder of the Pennsylvania School of the Fine Arts (1805), and president of the American Academy of Fine Arts, New York (1826). His most famous allegorical painting is Court of Death (1820).
