The sulilsa was first mentioned in The Tale of Igor’s Campaign (12th century) as a weapon used by the Russians and the Polovtsy; other references appear in the Russian chronicles. In an account of the Battle of Lipitsa (1216), the sulitsa is referred to as the weapon used in the first attack. The word sulitsa derives from the Protoslavic *sudlitsa, related to the word sovat’, which in Old Russian meant “to throw a spear.” In one of the manuscript copies of the Novgorod chronicles, the term sulitsa has evidently been replaced by the equivalent term sov’.
