Rudakov, Apolinarii Vasil’evich

Born June 9, 1871, in Lenkoran’, in what is now the Azerbaijan SSR; died May 11, 1949, in Vladivostok. Soviet sinologue.

Rudakov graduated from the department of Oriental languages of the University of St. Petersburg in 1896. In the period 1897–1902 he made scholarly field trips to China. From 1906 to 1917 he was director of the Oriental Institute in Vladivostok. From 1920 to 1939 he was a professor in the department of Oriental studies at the University of the Far East in Vladivostok. He studied Chinese and Manchurian and wrote textbooks on the languages. His main works were on the history and economy of Kirin Province, Manchuria, and on the history of the Boxer (I Ho T’uan) Rebellion of 1899–1901 (The I Ho Ch’uan Society and Its Importance in Recent Events in the Far East, 1901).
