Rudzinskii, Dionisii

(in Lithuanian, Dionizas Rudzinkas). Born May 12, 1866, on the farmstead of Skopiŝkis, now in Raseiniai Raion, Lithuanian SSR; died Nov. 25, 1954. Soviet plant breeder. Honored Scientist of the Lithuanian SSR. Professor at the Lithuanian Agricultural Academy.

Rudzinskii graduated in 1893 from the Petrovskoe Agricultural Academy (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy). He was a pioneer in plant breeding in Russia. From 1903, together with V. R. Vil’iams, he bred winter and spring wheat, oats, and potatoes; from 1905, he also worked with peas, flax, and clover. From 1913 to 1922 he was head of the breeding station of the Moscow Institute of Agriculture (organized 1903), where he and his co-workers developed several valuable crop varieties. In 1922 he organized the Dotnuva Breeding Station in Lithuania. Rudzinskii was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
