universal transverse Mercator's grid

universal transverse Mercator's grid

. A military grid system in which a grid network is applied to the transverse Mercator projection of the zones of the earth's surface, extending from the 80° N to the 80° S latitudes. The region is divided into sixty zones, each covering 6° of longitude, and twenty bands, each covering 8° of latitude. The 6° longitudes are numbered eastward from 1 to 60 inclusive, commencing at the 180° meridian, whereas the 8° latitude bands are identified by letters, commencing at C (omitting I and O) northward from the 80° S line. Each 6° zone has its own grid; the projection is the transverse Mercator based on the central meridian of that zone. The area bounded by 6° and 8° is now divided into 100-km squares. Each column of squares is given identifying letters, and each row of squares is similarly identified.
