Universal Workers’ Union

(Általános Munkásegylet; UWU), the first socialist organization of the Hungarian proletariat; founded in February 1868. From 1870 to 1872 the national section of the First International, headed by K. Farkas, successfully disseminated the doctrine of scientific socialism in the UWU, overcoming the influence of Lassalleanism. The UWU organized meetings and demonstrations of solidarity with the Paris Commune; this served as the pretext for the arrest of its leaders and the dissolution of the organization in 1872.
