Either of two large, chiefly nocturnal lemurs of Madagascar having long dense fur and a ruff around the face, Varecia variegata or V. rubra, the former having a black-and-white coat and the latter having a black-and-red coat. Ruffed Lemur Ruffed Lemur or vari (Lemur variegatus), a mammal of the lemur family, order of primates. Length of body, up to 60 cm; tail, up to 60 cm. The ruffed lemur has thick fur covered with large black and white (or reddish) spots of various shapes; the tail is black and bushy; around the neck and ears is a fluffy ruff of white fur. The animal’s coloring is very variable. Ruffed lemurs are widespread on the northeastern coast of Madagascar. They live in herds of ten to 15 individuals in the crowns of trees in tropical forests and feed mainly on plants. It is a nocturnal animal. The female bears two or three offspring. The species has been almost annihilated.
