ruffled border

fingerlike processes of the osteoclast that act to increase the surface area of the cell. The ruffled border extends into the subosteoclastic zone and facilitates delivery of digestive enzymes and creation of an acidic environment to permit the osteoclast to degrade bone. Products of the bone degradation are resorbed at this border.
