Touggourt

a city in Algeria, in the northeastern Algerian Sahara, in Ouargla Wilaya. Population, 27,000 (1968). Touggourt is the capital and the trade and handicraft center for a group of oases in the northwestern Grand Erg Oriental. It is connected with Biskra by railroad and highway, and the Hassi Messaoud-Skikda petroleum pipeline runs nearby. Touggourt is an area where dates are dried and shipped.
